When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” (NIV) Luke 5:4
I was involved in a programme this week and the verse above was the theme verse so I decided to memorise this. I watched a fantastic message on this by Priscilla Shirer which really increased my understanding of this passage. My focus in this post though is on this particular verse and the section where Jesus asked Simon to go out into deep water.
I looked up the word deep and definitions included reaching far, vast and extensive. Deep can be scary. It often calls for an increased level of trust, as Jesus takes us beyond our current level. It’s a growing reliance on Him as it’s simply beyond what we can work to accomplish on our own, there’s space automatically created for Him to work.
This week, I learnt what this looked like in a very practical way which I’ll share about in a future post. God also revealed to me an area where I had grown comfortable in my shallow water and He wanted me to come into the deep water with Him where I could trust Him to take care of me and to be my safety net.
As I’m writing this post, I’m reminded of Oceans by Hillsong which encourages us to follow God into the deep water- whatever that may look like in your particular circumstance.
Will you obey and go into deep?
