You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Matthew 5:14 (NIV)
Officially halfway through this challenge! 🙂
I chose this passage in Matthew following on from Devon Franklin’s quote that I’ve been internalising last week. This first verse reinforces that God has created us to stand out. Light certainly does not blend in and anything on a hill can be seen from miles away.
When I lived in Scotland, I lived about 25 miles from the city of Stirling where there is the famous National Wallace Monument and Stirling Castle both of which are on hills. From the roof of Gartmore House, we could see these two iconic landmarks which have formed such a crucial part of Scottish history. Some nights, we could also see a bright light from Glengoyne distillery. It was like a beacon compared to its dark surroundings.
In this verse, Jesus calls us as his followers light of the world. We therefore have no option but to stand out from the world around us, we have been called in this way. As much as we may want to remain hidden, truly following Jesus makes this impossible.
Let’s embrace our true calling and follow where Jesus leads us on this journey.
