give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. (NIV) 1 Thessalonians 5:18
This post is quite late although I memorised the verse last week. I have had a very busy week and I look forward to sharing what I’ve been up to in a future post.
I chose this verse following my gratitude post as in researching verses for that, I discovered this one which I loved so I decided to add it to my verse arsenal.
This verse is both a challenge and encouragement to me. The first portion can be hard as saying thank you to God when bad stuff happens is usually the opposite of what I want to do. It’s fun to do it for the positive things in my life but I’m learning to broaden my perspective in the not-so-good times and find other elements or events I can thank God for in the midst of tough circumstances. I have a recent example of this, we had a very rainy day here and it took me 2.5 hours to get home in a trip that usually takes 45-50 minutes. As I sat there stuck in traffic, feeling really tired, I remembered saying to God I’m not sure there is anything to be thankful for in this situation, and He showed me that even then I still could be thankful. I was supposed to be alone on that drive home, however, the day unfolded in such a way that I had a good friend with me which was a huge reason to be thankful and there were other “thankfulnessses” I discovered too.
The second portion of this verse is encouraging to me as it reminds me that the first part is very doable through Jesus. It is God’s will that I give thanks in every situation and therefore He has equipped me to do that through His Son, Jesus. God ensures that He gives us what we need to accomplish that which He has for us.
Thank You God!
